knots and embellished with
beads and baubles transform
into chic curtains. An old oil stain on
the floor blossoms into the center of
a painted sunflower “rug.” Such is
the kind of quilting and crafting
ingenuity that Hen & Chicks Studio
strives to inspire in customers as it
helps them uncover their inner artists.
“Everyone is creative in some way,
and we try to draw that out, whether
it’s with fabric and thread or pen and
paper,” says owner Heidi Kaisand,
who began her professional career
developing recipes for cookbooks
but soon discovered she preferred
crafting “recipes” for quilts instead.
The idea for her shop came to
fruition while searching for a
location to launch a creative retreat
center after a stint hosting retreats at
rented venues. “I’ve always been that
mother hen because I love the idea of
taking care of people,” says Heidi,
whose shop logo of a hen and chicks
playfully reflects those instincts. She
found the perfect spot to feather that
