ver the years, the location
of Homestead Hearth quilt
shop—Mexico, Missouri,
about 50 minutes from the state
capital of Jefferson City—has been a
source of confusion to many. “You
don’t even want to know how many
of our packages have been sent to the
country of Mexico,” owner Sarah J.
Maxwell says, smiling. Despite being
off the beaten path, the shop has
become a quilters’ destination since
it was opened in 2002 by Sarah and
fellow quilter Dolores Smith in a
two-story brick building constructed
in 1910 as a chicken hatchery.
Sarah began quilting as a young
adult, progressing through classes
and guild memberships into teaching
and designing patterns and fabric
(Designs by Sarah J). Dolores
inherited her love of fabric and
sewing from a favorite aunt. She now
designs patterns and fabric under the
name Time Worn Toolbox Designs.
