This manual-focus super-wide-angle lens is majestic for astrophotography

ith a top viewing angle

and superb image

quality at its widest

aperture setting, the Samyang

XP 14mm f/2.4 manual-focus

lens ticks all the boxes for

astrophotography with a

full-frame camera. The Sigma

14mm f/1.8 DG HSM Art is a

f-stop faster, but coma and

astigmatism are noticeable

towards the corners of the

image frame. That said, the

Sigma gives negligible

aberrations when its aperture

is narrowed to f/2.5. The Irix

15mm f/2.4 fares less well,

giving similar ‘wide-open’ coma

and astigmatism to the Sigma,

despite its max aperture. The

Samyang 10mm f/2.8 ED AS

NCS CS is the most ideal prime

for APS-C astrophotography.

For full-frame zooms, the

Sigma 14-24mm f/2.8 DG HSM

Art leads the field, with the

Tamron SP 15-30mm f/2.8 Di

VC USD G2 and Canon EF

16-35mm f/2.8L USM III taking

second and third places.
