ven if you’re phone doesn’t support Android 5.0,
you’ll have probably noticed many of your
favourite apps have got a new look.All of
Google’sapps,fromGoogle+tothePlaystore,have
been redesigned with a colourful new style. Known
officially as Material Design, this mixture of bright
colours and flattened shapes is Google’s new design
language. Not only is it a big shift from theTron-like
Holo design introduced with Android 3.0 Honeycomb,
butit’sbeingrolledoutacrossAndroid,ChromeOS
andthewebforamoreunifieduserexperience.Announcing the new approach at Google I/O last
year, Matias Duarte, vice president for Design at the
Mountain View company, described the new look as:
"grounded in tactile reality, inspired by our study of
paperandink,yetopentoimaginationandmagic".
Codenamed ‘quantum paper’ while in
development, Material Design seems to be the
logical conclusion of where Android was going when
Google Now cards were introduced in Android
Jellybean. Card-like menu screens unfold and slide
on top of each other, while the interface seems tophysically respond to your touch with a ripple effect,
whichisprettysmart.
Android has a bad rep for choosing functionality
over form when compared to Apple, but Material
Design proves this is most definitely not the case –
