604 CHAPTER 16: The Future of Android: The 64-Bit Android 5.0 OS

Once Java 7 is installed, you will be ready to download and install the Android Studio 5.0 bundle,
which uses Java 7 both as a platform to run the IntelliJ IDEA as well as the Java SDK for Android 5.0,
which uses 64-bit Linux OS Kernel and the Java 7 platform.

Android Studio 5: IntelliJ Android SDK Bundle

The Android 5 OS uses a new IDE from JetBrains, called IntelliJ, as the foundation for a new
Android Studio 5.0 bundle development environment, which is currently available in beta on the
developer.android.com web site. Currently, this is at developer.android.com/sdk/installing/
studio.html, but this could change, so it’s best to use Google to search for “Android Studio
Bundle download”.

Figure 16-4 shows the Android Studio BETA page, which contains information about this Android
Studio beta program, software, and what the new Android Studio will offer to developers, including
the Gradle build system, expanded template support for the new Google Play Services 5.0 covered
earlier in this chapter, the Lint tool and ProGuard, as well as other advantages, such as Google
Cloud Platform support and Rich (graphical) Layout Editor support. When I downloaded Android
Studio, it was at beta version 0.8.0, as you can see in the image.
