614 CHAPTER 16: The Future of Android: The 64-Bit Android 5.0 OS

Next let’s take a look at how to get to the IntelliJ IDEA documentation in case you want to read about
what the software can do for you, which is always a good idea. Click on the Docs and How-Tos option
at the bottom of the Quick Start screen, shown on the left side of Figure 1 6-1 7 , and then click on the
Read Help option at the top of the Docs and How-Tos screen, shown on the right side of Figure 1 6-1 7.

As you can see on the Docs and How-Tos screen, there is also access to the Tips of the Day dialog
series, as well as access to the JetBrains TV eLearning content and reference materials regarding
keymap (shortcuts) and info regarding plugin development, if you want to expand the capabilities of
IntelliJ on your own time. These are all areas that you should examine more closely when you have
the time to do so, because you can never really know enough about your IDE, since it is the tool that
you will be leveraging to create your software applications!

Once you click on the Read Help option, the JetBrains help web site will open, as shown in Figure 1 6-1 8 ,
and you will have access to the information that you will need to know about how to use the IntelliJ IDEA
for your Android 5.0 applications development. At least read the Getting Started, Basic Concepts, and
Usage Guidelines sections, and if you really want to come up to speed on IntelliJ IDEA, you will want to
read the Reference section, as well as all of its sub-sections. Even if you don’t understand everything that
you read at the first sitting, you will remember things that you read later as you are using Android Studio
that will suddenly make sense, you will know where you read them, and you can return there again later
to put it all into context!

Since we are here in the Quick Start dialog and one of the choices is the New Project (creation)
option, let’s take a look at how to create a new Android 5.0 application. Then you will take a look at
how to upgrade your IDE to the latest revision (0.8.2) as well as how to add a custom SDK, such as
Android TV.
