Although it is a misnomer to say that this generation
doesn’t create, but instead just consume, I haven’t been
able to shake this thought for a while now. And I only
ï nally put my ï nger on it when we were getting this issue
of HWM underway.
Our main story focuses on the rather well worn topic
of travel photography, particularly about enhancing
your photos. What’s the point you might ask, when we
are basically shooting our lives 24/7 with our always-
connected devices, on social media, using dozens of
ready-made ï lters?
This is where I connected the dots of my struggle with
the creation-consumption conundrum. Although we
create far more content today than ever before, we create
for mass consumption. Creators end up being slaves to the
masses, who have the power to dictate what they like to
see in the global popularity contest that is social media.
The problem of course, is that we just cannot consume
enough of it even though we’ve seen the same #foodporn
dish from the same restaurant shot ad nauseam. Hell, I do
it; all my friends do it. Why not right? After all, we’re just
one post away from being the next viral sensation.
What I’m trying to say is that if we’re going to create,
we should take charge of technology to enable our
creativity, instead of continuously populating the landï ll
that is “generic auto-everything”.
