If you have an old wheelbarrow sitting around, this is the perfect way to
give it a new, meaningful life. In fact, if the wheelbarrow has holes rusted
through, that’s even better—there’s no need to add drainage holes! Even flat
or missing tires don’t matter for this project—any old wheelbarrow will do.

    tenuifolia)

  • Cilantro

STEP 1 Flip the wheelbarrow upside down and use the
hammer and scratch awl to create eight to ten^1 ⁄ 2 -in.
drainage holes in the bottom of the wheelbarrow, if
there are no openings or holes already present. Turn
the wheelbarrow upright and fill it with the potting soil
blend to within 1 in. of the upper rim.

STEP 2 Choose a mixture of flowering plants chosen
from the list above and add them to the wheelbarrow.
You can also plant perennials in your wheelbarrow
planter, just remember to pull them from the
wheelbarrow and plant them somewhere in the ground
before winter arrives, because many are not winter-
hardy when grown in containers.

HOW TO MAKE A GOOD BUG WHEELBARROW GARDEN

STEP 3 Water your newly planted wheelbarrow well
and maintain it throughout the growing season. It’s
fine to harvest a few herb sprouts from time to time,
but in order for these plants to support beneficial
insects, they have to be allowed to come into flower.
Don’t overharvest the herbs you include, and
encourage them to bloom.

NOTE: Feel free to move the wheelbarrow around your
patio or garden, but make sure it receives a minimum
of 6 hours of full sun per day.
