field. You can lose one match and

survive; lose a second and you are

sent packing.

On today’s 5♦ from round five,

West finds the clever lead of his

jack of diamonds. His five useful

cards in dummy’s known five-card

club suit tell him to cut down club

ruffs in declarer’s (presumably

short-trump) hand.

As declarer, you win the lead

with the queen and lead up a club.

When West plays low in smooth

fashion, you wisely refrain from

wasting dummy’s king, instead

inserting the nine. East wins the

ten and continues his partner’s

good work, returning a second dia-

mond.

You win in dummy and ruff a

second club, pleased to observe the

ace appear. You ruff a heart and

ruff a third club with your last dia-

mond. You ruff a second heart and

cash the master diamond, drawing

East’s last diamond. You cash the

promoted king of clubs to reach

this four-card ending.

Can you make a third trick from

the position? You know East has

the spades from his opening bid.

You also know he has the ace of

hearts — again for the opening

bid.

You cross to the ace of spades

and exit with the king of hearts,

discarding dummy’s losing club.

East wins the ace and but has to

lead from the queen-ten of spades

round to dummy’s king-jack.
