Which of the following aviation
abbreviations is/are unlikely to affect
you as a GA pilot flying a light
aircraft in VMC?
a EOBT b CVR c UTC d RASH
2
You’re flying an ILS approach and,
as you fly over the outer marker
which is 6 nm from the runway
threshold, you notice that your CDI needle
is two dots left of centre. Approximately
how far away in metres from the
centreline of the approach is your aircraft
displaced laterally?
a 50m b 100m c 200m d 750m
3
You are flying abroad and using an
aeronautical chart on which the
heights of some restricted airspace
and obstacles are printed in metres. Which
is the rule of thumb to use when
converting metres to feet?
a multiply by 3
b add 10% and then multiply by three
c divide by three
d multiply by 3 then add 10%
4
What are the lines called which, on
a meteorological chart, join points
of equal atmospheric pressure?
a isoclines b isogonals c isomers d isobars
5
A GPS receiver calculates its
position by determining its distance
from a number of satellites. What
does it measure in order to do this?
a the phase difference between signals from
the satellites
b the time taken for a signal from the receiver
to pass to each satellite and return
c the time between transmission and
reception of a signal from a satellite
d the time between reception of signals from
different satellites
6
What is Va?
a maximum speed in turbulent air
b maximum speed for full control
movement
c approach speed
d stalling speed with flaps and undercarriage
retracted
e design manoeuvring speed
7
This

the tail fin of this
light aircraft is
connected to
which piece of on-board
equipment?
a COM VHF transceiver
b ADF
c GPS
d VOR

As you taxi out from
the apron to depart a
busy airport with
which you are not familiar
the Tower controller says,
“Golf Tango-Romeo taxi via
Echo 1 to Runway 23.” You
proceed along taxiway Echo 1
and see that Runway 30
crosses it between where you are and the
hold for Runway 23. Do you have to stop
there and call Tower for clearance to cross
Runway 30?
a yes b no

You are taking an over-the-counter
medication (e.g. Ibuprofen) for a
sore leg muscle and the label
warns of possible side-effects such as
nausea and disorientation. How soon after
the dosing interval should you wait before
you fly as pilot in charge of an aircraft?
a provided you are not experiencing any
side-effects, there is no need to wait.
b do not fly until the recommended interval
between doses has passed.
c do not fly until twice the recommended
dosing interval has passed.
d do not fly until three times the
recommended dosing interval has passed.
How air-brained are you?
By James Allan
Not many light aircraft b 1
are fitted with a Cockpit
Voice Recorder. EOBT is
estimate off-block time
(used in flight plans); UTC
is co-ordinated universal
time (aka GMT or Zulu
time) and RASH is the
abbreviation used in TAFs
and METARs for
rain-showers.
Full deflection on a c 2
VOR CDI equates to 10°
(so each dot represents
2°) but full deflection on
an ILS Localizer is
normally only 2.5° (so
each dot represents 0.5°).
The 1 in 60 rule gives a 1
degree deviation at 6nm
(= 11.1 km) as 185 metres.
(both give the d or b 3
same result)
d 4
c 5
(design b or e 6
manoeuvring speed can
be defined as the speed
above which it is unwise
to make full application of
any single flight control,
because that could
generate forces greater
than those for which the
airframe structure has
been designed)
d 7
(a clearance to ‘taxi b 8
to’ the take-off runway
assigned to the aircraft is
not a clearance to cross
that assigned take-off
runway, or to taxi onto
that runway but it is a
clearance to cross other
runways that intersect the
taxi route to that assigned
take-off runway)
The EU Essential c 9
Requirements for Air
Operations. Paragraph 7.g
states:
‘A crew member must not
perform allocated duties
on board an aircraft when
under the influence of
psychoactive substances
or alcohol .... ‘ If a
medicine label warns of
side-effects, many AMEs
recommend that a pilot
should not fly until twice
the recommended dosing
interval has passed. So, if
the label says ‘take every
4 hours’ then you should
wait at least 8 hours after
your final dose before
flying.

‘Air brained’ is largely about promoting safety, so
we are proud to be sponsored by Airbox, makers of
RunwayHD and the Aware 5 GPS. The winner can
choose which prize to receive, and will be the
sender of the first correct answer drawn at
random from all entries submitted to
[email protected] by the closing date,
17 April 2015. Emails must have ‘April Air
Brained’ entered as their subject and include the
sender’s postal address for shipping. The answer
to Q10 will appear in next month’s ‘Air Brained’.
State ‘no contact’ in the address line of your email if
you do not wish to receive information via email from
Pilot, the publishers of Pilot or Airbox Aerospace Ltd.
