the future.
There are two very interesting aircraft
that have been registered as NTCA this
month. The first is the Searey Manta II,
which is an amphibian powered by a Rotax
912, 80 hp engine. It is capable of cruising
at a stately 77 knots. The owner says that
he hasn’t had any trouble getting the Dept
of Water Affairs to give him permission to
operate on dams and rivers. This hopefully
means that we will see more amphibians
operating locally.
The second NTCA of note is the
Serenity Aviation Spacewalker II. Despite
is Star Wars name, this is a classic design
two place tandem seater powered by a 125
hp Lycoming engine. With a cruise speed
of 100 knots and a claimed max speed of
110 knots it could be quite a useful cross
country machine and great fun to fly.
Amongst the other aircraft registered
in the NTCA section we see a delectable
Steen Skybolt added as well as an RV-7, a
Zenair CH701, another two Jabirus, another
Sling and a Bat Hawk.
Of the cancellations, a very old
Grumman Gulfstream 1 has gone to the
DRC, a Boeing 737-3B3 to France and
an Airbus A320 to the DRC. One of the
aircraft cancelled was actually exported to
Zimbabwe in 1991 but was not taken off the
register until now. I have been informed that
the CAA has identified some 400 aircraft
that should have been deleted from the
register long ago and this process will take
quite a while to complete.

TAIL PIECE
We have just lost one of our WOF
Huey’s while fighting what must be one of
the biggest wildfires ever in the Cape. My
condolences to the family and friends of
pilot Hendrik ‘Bees’ Marais. These guys do
an extremely dangerous job with the utmost
Otto Stumkeskill and dedication. I salute you all.j
