the various airfields and being given a tour
of the school is imperative and can often
make or break the deal.
Most importantly ...
Speak to the students! There should
always be at least one student studying or
relaxing around a flying school. Ask them
what they think of the school and what
their experience has been up to that point
in their training. Instructors and operations
controllers will always be positive about
the company that pays their salaries, but
the students who experience the training
first-hand will always give a more honest
account of the school they are at, as well
as the low-down on any politics that may
hinder your training.
Through my experience of earning my

PPL, I found these to be the things that
influenced me most in choosing the correct
flying school. Each one is different, and
while one school may be perfect for one
student, it could be the antithesis of that for
another. Being the multifaceted industry
that aviation is, you also need to decide
what you are going to use your licence
for. Crop spraying, banner towing and
aerobatics are all very different and it goes
without saying that just as each of these
will suit a different kind of person, the same
applies to the airfield and training school
(ATO) that you decide on.
The path to becoming a pilot is a

long and often labour-intensive one, but
taking the time and making the effort to
choose the correct ATO can make all the
difference. Ultimately a student would like
the best instruction as nothing in aviation is
cheap.
Few things, however, are more exciting
than that first training flight. For any
‘avgeek’, this is the first step to a completely
different world and is a day you will never

Every school has its own atmosphere. Choose one that makes you feel
comfortable. Many pilots make great friends with fellow student pilots.
