Ozone layer is
food for thought
on their way to being mastered,
one aspect remains potentially
serious and more difficult. I refer
to reports during the Concorde
era that flights at SST altitudes
were potentially damaging to the
ozone layer. I have no idea as to
the validity of these claims, but if
true they are food for thought.

Switch solution
The proposed key lock solution
to the problem of the cowling
being inadvertently left open
(Flight International, 16-22
February) has a flaw, in that the
key can also be overlooked by
the crew. Wouldn’t it be safer if
the door locks had a switch that
would prevent the engine
starting if not properly secured?

While it would seem that sonic
boom, overall external noise lev-
els and fuel burn for supersonic
transport (SST) aircraft are well

An apt tribute to a great aviator
How very pleasing and apposite to read a full page obituary for Eric
“Winkle” Brown (Flight International, 1-7 March). You have managed to
encapsulate his career so well. His phenomenal skills in flying and
communicating are now legend. I wonder if Flight International would
take a lead in searching for a suitable and inspiring memorial?
Surely there must be organisations and individuals who would be
prepared to sponsor a memorial to inspire later generations to con-
tribute to skills and innovation to aerospace development.
