Inthisarticle,wewilllookat basicbi-axialweavingwherestripsarewovenin justtwo
directions,verticallyandhorizontally.Thenumberof fabricsyouuseandthestripwidth is
your choice. Suggested measurements for a 9in block are given in the steps below.

Themethoddescribedhereusesfourfabricsthatareall
thesamewidth– twofortheverticalstrips(Fabrics1 and
2)andtwoforthehorizontalstrips(Fabrics3 and4).The
stripswerepreparedastubestripswithoutsideseams.The
finishedstripwidthwasin,sothestripswerecut2inx
about11inlong.A baseboardofcorkwasused with fusible
interfacing pinned on top (shiny side up).

ArrangesixFabric1 andsixFabric2 stripsalternately,
rightsidesuponthebasearea,buttingthemtogether and
pinning to the base down each side (seeFig5A).

Rotatetheboard90-degrees.Takea stripofFabric3 and
beginweavingit underandovertheFabric1 andFabric
2 strips,asinFig5B. Slidethestripintoplaceandpinit at
eachside.Takea Fabric4 stripandweaveit overandunder
theFabric1 andFabric2 strips.Slidethestripintoplaceto
nestleagainstthefirststripandpinit inplaceat eachside.
Repeat this process until all of the strips have been used.

Checkallthestripsarestraight,withnobowingat the
sides(seealsoTroubleshooting,page70).Nowpresswith
anirontofusethestripstothefusible interfacing, asinFig
5C (removing pins as needed).

If thefusibleinterfacinghasn’ttrappedallofthestrips
sucientlythenusea tape,suchasmaskingtape,tofix
theendsofthestripsinpositionandalsomarka straight
edgewheretheinseamallowancewillbeontheblock
(Fig5D). Removetheblockfromthebaseboard.Press
againfromthebacktofusetheinterfacingfurther.Sewa
bastinglinearoundtheblock,ainfromtheedge(Fig5E).
Removethetape.Trimtheblockdowntoitsunfinishedsize
(inthiscase 9 insquare)allowingainseamallowance
aroundtheedge(Fig5F). Theblockcouldbequilted(or
gridbasted)at thisstagetokeepthestripsinplace.The
seamallowancewillallowyou to add a border to the block
or sew it to other blocks.
