Beeb’s Long Wave goodbye
General Synopsis had an excellent
Ashes in 2010-11, even better than
Captain Strauss. Three times — at
Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney
— England’s moment of victory
was missed by listeners of Radio 4
Long Wave because the BBC had
cut away to the 00.48 Shipping
Forecast bulletin. Dogger, Fisher
and Bailey stole the thunder from
Swann, Bresnan and Tremlett. It
was a remarkable hat-trick.
“Welcome back to our Long
Wave listeners to the news that
England have just won,” Jonathan
Agnew explained, again. Some
grumbled at the interruption —
though there were gale warnings
in 11 sea areas that night so it had
an important purpose — but for
many it was merely pleasure
deferred. It had been 24 years
since England had won the Ashes
in Australia, what was a few
minutes more?
That could be coming to an
end. This week’s BBC review
proposed phasing out Long Wave
and with it the need to cut away
from Edgbaston to North Utsire
midway through the morning
session. Of course, almost
everyone these days can listen
online or on digital radio, but
some of us find the gentle
rhythms of the Shipping Forecast a
highlight of Test Match Special,
not an inconvenience.
The attraction of Test cricket is
the ebb and flow. Allowing your
mind to wander is part of its
loveliness, and if that means you
sometimes miss a bit of action, so
be it. Nor has it always been
General Synopsis’s fault. When
Graham Gooch reached his triple
hundred against India in 1990,
BBC television had cut away to
the 4.05 at Ascot.
The Shipping Forecast is part of
our national soundtrack, which is
why it accompanied Elgar at the
start of the 2012 Olympic opening
ceremony. Rather than divorcing
it from Test cricket with the end
of Long Wave, I vote the BBC
inserts it into the digital
commentary to offer a change of
pace, like bringing on a spinner
before lunch. They even have a
similar rhythm. “Broad: overs 7 to
8, fast to medium-fast, veering off,
good, occasionally moderate,
losing swing before tea.”
New Zealand’s
knockout blow
I wrote last week about the end of
a 20-year qualifying streak in
tennis. An even longer run came
to an end in Toulouse as New
Zealand’s rugby players failed to
reach the knockout stage of a
World Sevens Series event for the
first time since it began in 1999.
They won two of their three pool
matches but a 29-14 defeat by
Australia meant that they were
pipped by them and the United
States on points difference.
New Zealand, who had won 13
of the previous 22 World Series
titles, seem to be suffering from
Covid rustiness. Because of travel
restrictions they couldn’t play last
season and missed the first four of
seven events so far this
year. They come to
Twickenham today below
Spain in the standings and
just above Kenya. It
won’t last, of course, and
few would bet against
them in the
Commonwealth Games,
where they have won gold
five times out of six, but
let’s enjoy a fumbling giant
while we can.

Sour taste from
Olympic deal
Mayors from 11 Olympic host
cities met in Athens on Tuesday
to sign an agreement committing
the movement to promoting
health and physical activity. At
the same time, Team GB and Aldi
announced an extension to their
partnership that seeks to educate
children about healthy eating.
All laudable, of course, but it
sits uncomfortably with another
announcement this week that
Hershey, the American
confectionary giant, has signed a
deal to be the “domestic food
partner” of the 2028 Games in
Los Angeles. Ten years after the
London Games were called a
“carnival of junk food” for having
McDonalds, Coca-Cola and
Cadburys as its sponsors, the
Olympics still can’t resist sugary
income. Obesity crisis, what
obesity crisis?
Meanwhile, here comes the
ECB’s snack-sponsored
Hundred again with the Trent
Skips vs the Welsh Hula
Hoops. Oh for the days when
cricket was a healthy sport
promoting the likes of Tetley
Bitter and Benson & Hedges.
