make-up pros to follow
GET IN LINE
Fine lines around your lips can cause lipstick
to bleed. Don’t stop wearing bright colours,
though, just try these tricks. “Apply a little bit
of foundation along your lip line,” Taylor says,
“as this will help with feathering.” Or line lips
with a clear lip liner to keep lipstick looking
sharp: Dior Universal Contour Lip Liner
( 29 £22) is totally translucent. Finally, “try
using a liquid lipstick”, Taylor says. “These set
fast and last well without any bleeding edges.”
FIND THE SWEET SPOT
The Cinderella slipper of lip formulas lies
between glossy and matte. Too shiny and it will
feather into any lines, too matte and it will look
dry and cakey. The new Jones Road Lip Tints
( 30 £24) are balmy but pigmented, and come
in an array of sunny hues. ■ @verity_clark

BE BOLD
It’s make-up, have fun with it! “Bright colours
like reds and pinks lift a complexion,” Taylor
says. If you’re worried about lip colour looking
dated, avoid anything really dark, “which may
make lips appear smaller”, she advises.
PREP FIRST
If you have dry lips or think wearing lipstick
will draw attention to lip lines, try a lip primer.
Elizabeth Arden Advanced Lip-Fix Cream
( 28 £21) will help to fill in any cracks and is
lightweight, so you won’t feel it under lipstick.

SAY NO TO CONTOUR
“Traditional contouring doesn’t really work
on mature skin,” Taylor says, “as it can be
harsh and unflattering.” Tweak your approach
to bronzer by sweeping it over cheekbones,
not under them, and over the bridge of the
nose rather than down the sides. “This will
give a healthy veil of colour and summery
glow to the skin,” she says. Guerlain
Terracotta Blooming Bee ( 24 £40) is laced
with pink to warm up complexions naturally.
RAISE THE BLUSH
Avoid the clown look by keeping your blush
quite high on the cheekbone and blend,
blend, blend, so that everything looks soft and
subtle, Barnes says. Highly pigmented cream
formulas such as Rare Beauty Soft Pinch
Liquid Blush ( 25 £19) look like real skin and
last longer than powders. Use the tiniest
amount for a natural, healthy flush of colour.
DIAL DOWN THE GLITTER
For skin that looks softly luminous rather than
too obviously glowing, Wolff prefers to use
highlighters “without too much glitter or
shimmer”. Brands such as RMS Beauty, Ilia
and Delilah deliver sheer, creamy formulas
that are extremely flattering on more mature
skin, plus they’re easy to blend. RMS Beauty
Living Luminizer ( 26 £36) and Ilia
Illuminator ( 27 £33) tick all the boxes for the
glitter-averse but still create a lovely, long-
lasting, dewy finish.
Get wise with
your eye make-up
SOFTEN UP
The eye area has fragile skin that can show
signs of ageing before anywhere else. If
eyeliner has been your signature look for
decades you may suddenly find that you don’t
get quite as much definition when you draw
your line. Likewise, when it comes to
eyeshadow, drier skin and fine lines can cause
colour to wear off quickly or get lost in the
creases. You don’t need to retire your
favourite make-up looks, though: instead
adapt your application techniques.
DITCH LIQUID LINERS
“Heavy liner can make eyes look small and
hooded,” Greenwell says, so switch to a gel
or pencil line as this will give you more time to
blend before it sets. A top make-up-artist tip
for enhancing the eye area is to wiggle a
pencil or gel liner into the roots of the lashes
— this adds definition without drawing
attention to any lines. Illamasqua Colouring
Pencil — Eye ( 21 £16) contains castor oil,
making it very easy to blend. To create the
illusion of fuller lashes, Barnes suggests this
trick: dip a clean mascara brush into a bit of
translucent powder, then brush this through
lashes before putting on your mascara.
SWITCH BRUSHES
To make your eyes look bigger and brighter,
Greenwell recommends choosing eyeshadow
colours that are in your skin tone as these will
be the most flattering. Brush-wise, you want
to use something firm, not fluffy — anything
too soft will leave powder sitting on top of
lines and accentuating them. Try Sigma Firm
Shader Brush ( 22 £13).
KEEP BROWS NATURAL
Steer clear of filling in brows with anything
too heavy and dark, as this can make you look
severe, not sophisticated. Try Westman
Atelier Bonne Brow Defining Pencil
( 23 £35). The slanted tip is ideal for adding
subtle definition back into patchy brows. If
yours are going grey, choose a soft blonde
pencil to fill in any gaps. For super-patchy
brows, consider going to a professional. From
brow tints that add colour back to lamination
— a treatment that fills in gaps and tames
unruly brows using a chemical solution —
salon options can give natural-looking results.
