uilds in MMOs are a
wonderful thing. They
bring players together
under a common
cause to tackle deadly
dungeons, navigate new challenges,
and build friendships. But like all
online communities, they don’t
always last.
When a game has been out for over
a decade, it’s natural that some
people will move on to other games
or get too busy with life, leaving
formerly tight-knit groups to fizzle
out. It’s no one’s fault – that’s just
how it goes. It’s also why I decided to
risk all of my in-game wealth in one
huge server move gamble.
The latest patch for FFXIV (6.1)
saw the opening of a new housing
area, and with it hundreds of new
plots for home enthusiasts to
scramble after. It also introduced
a new lottery system to give everyone
a fairer chance of getting a plot, after
years of notorious housing woes. I
already owned a house so I never
really thought about the lottery. It
was a silly house shaped like a Paissa
(a giant, wide-eyed Totoro-monkey-
squirrel-thing) full of stupid little
things I’ve collected over the last
eight-ish years.
But the game has gotten quieter
for me in the last two years – my
in-game friends logged in less and
less as other commitments came first.
I was getting lonely.Luckily for me I met a bunch of
lovely people in-game in a cross-
server event that led to us forming
our own offshoot Discord and regular
casual raid night. There was just one
problem: all of my friends were on
another server. I’d need to move for
us to make our own guild, and that
would mean leaving my house and
everything I built up there behind
with no guarantee of a home on the
other end...MOVING DAY
After a big sigh and a brief “Fuck it”,
I packed up my belongings and
