Over the past few years lighting systems for
jets have become vastly more popular, and
companies such as Unilight have been a cen-
tral part of this, with a range of easy to install,
programme and use lights, controllers and
ancillary items. Based in Austria, Unilight now
offer a vast range of individual lights, as well
as an ever increasing number of light sets for
both specific scale jets and various sizes of
sport jets. Having seen how the addition of
lights adds a new dimension to jet flying, not
to mention the great benefits they give in
terms of orientation, particularly in the often
murky U.K. skies, I was delighted when
Unilight announced their new sets of lights
aimed specifically at larger sport jets, with a
set being available for my large Skymaster
Avanti XXL. When the set arrived it consisted
of four main items, these being the controller,
port and starboard nav/strobe lights and a
single powerful strobe/anti-collision light.
Taking the controller first, this was the latest
Black.4 unit, which as its name suggests is a
four channel unit, having outputs for Strobe,
Navigation, Beacon and Landing lights, as
well as a servo output to allow operation of
connected functions such as landing lights
that drop down from the wing or
switches/valves. Weighing a mere 8 grams
without leads and measuring 50 x 35 x 6mm,
the controller is both light and compact, and
should be easy to install in almost any model,
being supplied complete with a couple of neat
mounting brackets. There are two input
leads, a JR style lead which connects to the
control channel of the receiver and a BEC
type lead for the main power input, which
would normally be a 2 or 3 cell Li-Po battery.Unilight Avanti XXL Lighting Set
