Radio Control Jet International - April-May 2018

Tube cutters are a must for square clean cut ends.

This Skymaster gear locking cylinder arrived from the factory with the fittings open.
I added a loop of tube to seal it before using the Dremel on the servo openings etc.

cess and gravity would assist in slamming the
gear down.
The main variable with any setup will be the
choice of operating valve, not only the manu-
facturer, there are various electronic and
servo operated types to choose from.
There are pros and cons to either choice, the
electronic are simpler to install, being self
contained. Servo operated valves require
more space, and its important the linkage
does not create a side load as the piston can
leak. Thought as to how you will transfer a
rotary motion into a linear push requires con-
sideration on servo arm and pushrod length.
I measure the valves piston stroke and then
look to use only 50% travel on each side of
centre.
I like mechanical valves since you can opera-
te them without switching the radio on. This is
great when you are packing the model away
at the end of a flying session. You can see the
movement and set things easily.
Servo operated valves that incorporate gear
door control are popular, but they don’t ope-
rate properly if the cylinders pass air. The
sequence triggers inside require a build up in
pressure to fire.
Electronic valves can be fussy on the channel
pulse width, requiring an increased travel
figure on the channel (Gear/Doors) to opera-
te. When they don’t operate, you need to fault
find and understand the way they are control-
led to sort things out.
A small leak will never seal itself, it can only
get worse. If you ignore it, the least that will
happen is your days flying will be interrupted,
the worst you will damage-even write off your
airframe.
