TRUMPETER

CONVAIR F-106B DELTA DART
Serving the United States Air Force from the 1960s through
the 1980s, the Convair F-106 Delta Dart was considered
one of the best interceptors in the history of the US Air
Force. They served as the primary all-weather interceptor
aircraft of the Air Force and the Air National Guard for more
than 29 years. They were the main “dancing partner” of the
Russian Tu-95 Bear tactical bombers.
The Delta Dart was developed from the Convair F-
Delta Dagger. The more powerful Pratt & Whitney

J-75-P-17 engine offers the aircraft a higher speed to Mach

  1. 4 AIM-4 Falcon Missiles and an Air-2 Rocket can be
carried in the weapons bay under the fuselage. The F-
fi rst fl ew on 26th December 1956, and entered service in
June 1959. 277 single seater A types were built.
Trumpeter’s new kit replicates the two-seat ‘B’ version of
this famous aircraft in 1:72 and should be available as this
magazine goes to press. Available from all good model
    shops.

The Lockheed F-104 Starfi ghter is one of the most
famous fi ghters in the history of aviation and also one
with the longest operational life: its history began at
the end of the 50s and ended, for some air forces, in
mid 2000s. Its unique airframe, with slender fuselage
and very little wing surface, made this aircraft ideal

as an interceptor. Thanks to the thrust of its General
Electric J79-GE-11A afterburning turbojet engine,
it could exceed Mach 2,2 with an excellent rate of
climb. But it was not very manoeuvrable and diffi cult
to pilot. The F-104G Starfi ghter was produced on
license by several European aviation industries.
From the mid-60s, it became the standard interceptor
for many NATO countries including Italy, Germany,
Holland, Greece, and Turkey. The armament was
basically the same found on previous versions, with
a 20 mm Vulcan cannon and the option to fi t under
the wings air-to-air missiles, bombs, or additional fuel
tanks to increase the airplane’s range. With time,
reconnaissance duties were added to the traditional
interceptor service. The F-104G was therefore
equipped with a dedicated “Orpheus” reconnaissance
external pod that gave excellent operational results.

JSF PROGRAM X-32A AND X-35B

During the ‘90s
the United States
Department of
Defence launched
the JSF (Joint
Strike Fighter)
contest to assign
the production
of a new 5th
generation
Multi-role combat
aircraft. Boeing participated to the contest
with the concept demonstrator aircraft X-
while Lockheed Martin presented its XF-
prototype. The Boeing X-32 was developed
and realised around a large one piece carbon
fi bre composite delta wing and characterised
by the big size air intake placed under the
cockpit. The Lockheed Martin reply was based
on the XF-35, using a lot of technology and
aerodynamic solutions already successfully
adopted on the fi ghter F-22 Raptor. For both
concept demonstrator aircrafts were developed
several applications as the conventional take-
off / landing version and the STOVL (short
take-off and vertical landing) version. On
2001 the Department of Defence announced
that the Lockheed Martin X-35 won the JSF
competition and from it the new F-35 Lightning
II was born.
The box contains two 1:72 models.

SAAB JA 37/AJ 37 VIGGEN

The Saab Viggen
fi ghter has been,
for years, the
backbone of
the Swedish Air
Force. The fi rst
AJ 37 Viggen has
been developed
to be a multi-role
combat aircraft
able to perform
air defence, anti-ships and ground attack
missions. Later on, in order to increase
the effectiveness in the Swedish air
defence system, the JA-37 “Jaktviggen”
version was developed. It has been
equipped with a new set of avionics, radar
and weapon system able to enhance
its role of all-weather fi ghter-interceptor
aircraft. In terms of design the Viggen
was characterised by the adoption of the
delta-canard aerodynamic solution and
it was powered by the big and powerful
Volvo RM8 afterburning turbofan. Thanks
to it the Viggen was able to reach the max
speed of Mach 2,1. The Saab Viggen has
been progressively replaced by the new
and technologically advanced Saab JAS
39 Gripen.
Original 1:48 moulds from ESCI, colour
instruction sheet, decals sheet for 4
versions.
