AeroModeller – June 2018

Maris Dislers sent an email about the small RC TY 3-2 which he reviewed in the last issue.
“Don Howie and I were out this morning trying for in-fl ight shots of the little TY 3-2.
I’ve fl own it quite a lot recently and it really is fun. One fl ight attracted maybe 20 Galahs
(native Australian birds), who playfully circled and for a while it was in the middle of the
fl ock. Talk about wing turbulence! Another fl ight was more or less in free fl ight, circling
left at constant height, with only occasional correction every minute or so to keep it in the
sports fi eld. Around 10 minute fl ight that one. Sadly, the wind came up and it drifted over
the road and when it clearly could make no headway in the breeze, I spiraled it in. Landed
somewhere on the salt fl ats past the uncrossable treated sewage channel. RIP for a nice
model. At least I can report excellent range at least 300 metres, at which it becomes a bit
hard to see the little b*gger.”

OCULUS UPDATE
Gareth Evans is
having continued
success with Oculus
his supercap powered
FF which was last
month’s free plan.
“The Oculus is
actually not a new
design, having been
made about 4 years
ago... but guess
what, by complete
coincidence we were
fl ying my original

model in still evening
air at our Severn
estuary FF site just
a couple of hours
before getting home
and fi nding the
AeroModeller on the
mat.”
Good to know that
Gareth is still fl ying
his model. Thanks to
Tim Chants for the
atmospheric photo
taken that evening.

The Banggood TY 3-2 is great outdoors in still conditions but won’t penetrate a headwind.

BUCKMINSTER RETRO FEST
The BMFA National Centre is
being well used by many diff erent
disciplines within aeromodelling.
If you’ve yet to attend the
Buckminster, Sewstern site then
the Retro Fest for vintage FF,
CL and RC on 6-8th July is a
great opportunity which will off er
something of interest to most
readers. Of particular note is
the running of the Eddie Riding
Trophy event along with other
scale classes on the 7-8th July.
The fi ve scale classes are: Open
Rubber, CO2/Electric, IC Power,
Jet (Rapier, Jetex, DF) and Eddie
Riding Designs. With the exception
of the Eddie Riding Designs event,
all the competitions will be to the
normal BMFA Scale Rules. Note
that models for the Eddie Riding
Designs competition must be
built from one of the 8 original

plans – the specifi c rules are
being fi nalised prior to the next
BMFA Scale Technical Committee
meeting and are less stringent
on scale – more about building
to the plan (a bit like indoor kit
scale). If you are not already aware
of which plans are, or are not,
eligible, then seek advice from the
John Minchell or the BMFA Scale
Technical Committee before you
commence building.

Eddie Riding’s Westland Widgeon plan was originally published in April 1943
AeroModeller. This model was fl own at one of the 2000’s Woodvale Riding Trophy events.
