ever so slightly throughout the review. Lastly,
the CM.002A1 is front wired. I know this is like
saying that a percentage of the population is
left handed, but I’ve never been overly keen on
front wired M4’s, as removing the barrel and
hop requires unplugging the blade connectors,
and threading them through the receiver. Not a
massive issue at all, just a personal preference,
and not something I can hold against Cyma.
FUNCTIONAL TESTS
So, the first thing on the list was to run it
through the chrono and see how much trouble
I was in. To be honest, at first I was feeling
pretty smug, as wouldn’t you know it, we were
well above the joule limit for the UK, in fact she
was running very steadily at 1.6 joules. Very
quickly however, I noticed the consistency of
the readings... 416.2, 416.6, 416.3, 416.8, and
it just kept going. I’m not here to report that
every CM.002A1 is going to perform like this,
but whatever Cyma have done with the hopup
and air seal components, for this rifle at least, it
seems to be working. After 30 rounds I did see a
couple of shots at 415, and a couple at 418, but
still I was very impressed with the consistency.
The above being said, the M120 not only made
the rifle unusable for UK fields, but the trigger
response was severely lacking. At first I used
the supplied battery, an 8.4V Ni-MH, to which
the rifle felt like it was trying to drag its own
carcass over a bed of nails. In all fairness I think
these batteries are supplied simply to tick a box
sometimes. I quickly moved over to a 7.4V Lipo
and the results were much improved, but still,
I have to report not great. The M120 requires
more torque than the motor can give, and more
current than the supplied battery is able to
supply, and because of that, each shot felt, and
sounded seriously laboured.
DECISIONS, DECISIONS...
So would I buy the CM.002A1? Well in actual
fact I have previously owned one. I wanted
a cheap rifle to tinker with over time, to try
and create yet another backup that I could
confidently bring to the field and keep up with
the rest of the team. In all honesty, for not very
much money at all (less than £50), I turned it
into an absolute monster of a rifle. A cheap
mosfet, downgrading the spring, installing
an Rhop, and a little bit of shimming was all
that was required. I know I’m a little bit harsh
when it comes to Cyma, but it’s only because
of their choice of spring, everything else is
actually exceptional given the price, and the
gearbox which houses the spring is actually
well put together. The CM.002A1 weighs in at
3kg, so she’s not overly heavy. The quality of
the receiver and the polymer parts are good,
and they fit together nicely and with very little
wobble. Lastly, with a simple spring change,
and possibly a couple of other little mods, you
can have yourself a cracking little setup. This
rifle really caters to those wanting a V2 project,
maybe even more so than the new-starters of
the hobby, but if you are just getting into airsoft,
I wouldn’t dismiss the CM.002A1 straight away.
Although the trigger response isn’t as great as
I would like to see, you do get a fair amount for
your money, and when the time comes to learn
more of the technical side, you will have the
perfect project right in front of you.
