In focus: How Airbus and Boeing widebodies share market
For a quarter of a century, Airbus’s A330 and
A340 have been in competition with the
Boeing 767 and 777 in the widebody
category’s mid- to long-range sector.
The A330 was introduced to commercial
operations in 1994, a year after its four-
engined sibling – production of which came
to an end in 2011. Boeing’s 767 began pas-
senger services in 1982, while the airframer’s
larger 777 made its service debut in 1995.
The A330/A340 total stood at just under
950 in 2009, and has risen by 61%, to 1,530
units today. There were almost 1,700 aircraft
from the 767/777 families in use a decade
ago, climbing to just under 2,300 today.
Flight Fleets Analyzer shows the parked
ratio for the Airbus types rose sharply to hit
10% in 2015 and 2017, while the Boeing
models have maintained a steady 5-8%. ■05001,0001,5002,0002,5003,000May-09 May-10May-1 1 May-12May-13 May-14May-15 May-16May-17 May-18Total fleet Stored aircraftSource: Flight Fleets AnalyzerA330/A340 vs 767/777 families0%2%4%6%8%10%12%A330/A340 767/777 Stored A330/A340 Stored 767/777-501503505507509501,150Apr-17May-17Jun-17Jul-17Aug-17Sep-17Oct-17Nov-17Dec-17Jan-18Feb-18Mar-18Apr-18Narrowbody Regional Turboprop WidebodyCommercial monthly net orders, April 2017-2018Source: Flight Fleets Analyzer050100150200250300Apr-17May-17Jun-17 Jul-17Aug-17Sep-17Oct-17Nov-17Dec-17Jan-18Feb-18Mar-18Apr-18Narrowbody Regional TurbopropCommercial monthly deliveries, April 2017-2018WidebodySource: Flight Fleets Analyzer3%
