I

recently found myself on a home-bound Emirates fl ight that
was heading to Cyprus. I was travelling home for a spell,
taking advantage of the last bit of summer for the 2018 year
and as is typical for me, I wasn’t able to get much sleep.
Given a choice between the infl ight entertainment and reread-
ing Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett for the 1000th
time, I opted to give Emirates’ ICE a whirl. I began by fi rst exploring
the latest releases in terms of movies. Little luck there as everything
I had seen, and there wasn’t something in particular that tickled
my fancy in the fi lm archive either.
Next, I tried the audio library, which fared better. Emirates
does hold a sizeable collection with some decade-defi ning al-
bums, so I did manage to lose myself for an hour or so. It came
to a point though, where I ended up craving a specifi c song and I
couldn’t fi nd it.
Finally, I switched over to TV shows and to my glee I found a
show that I’m currently watching back in Dubai. The joy dissipated
quickly though, as I soon realised that the platform only had two
episodes — of the fi rst season.
It then occurred to me that what I really wanted at that very mo-
ment was access to my Netfl ix account and Spotify. I imagine that
once aircraft connectivity develops to the point where streaming
becomes economically viable, that will be the next step in terms of
infl ight entertainment.
Having a wide selection of entertainment on board is certainly
a plus for many travellers but it’s really hard to cater to all prefer-
ences. Being able to access and watch your own content while trav-
elling will undoubtedly be a premium service that quite a number
of passengers would certainly take advantage of.
Realising this though is more than just advancing connectivity
technology on aircraft and increasing network coverage. New part-
nerships will need to be formed with the content providers as well.
I suspect that in certain parts of the world, progress in this arena is
well underway.

Safe Travels!
