F1 ‘WOLFPACK’ RECEIVED its
rst F-14A Tomcats in July 1973,
having been formally established
alongside its sister squadron VF-2
‘Bounty Hunters’. It was recognized
as the rst eet squadron to y
the Tomcat. Home-stationed at NAS Miramar,
California, VF-1 scored the US Navy’s only F-14
aerial ‘kill’ during the 1991 Gulf War, downing a
Mil Mi-8 with an AIM-9 Sidewinder.
The squadron was assigned to Carrier Air Wing
Two (CVW-2) aboard USS Ranger in its later years
before being disbanded in 1993 — it has never
re-emerged.
