INFRASTRUCTURE
- Cancellation of
operations is dues
to non clearance
from insurance
companies or
TPAs, sudden
breakdown of bio
medical equipment,
insufficient
infrastructural
facilities. - Some of the
reasons for delay
in operations range
from blocking
of OT by doctors
in anticipation
of patients and
doctor’s preference
to complete
procedures before
his evening clinic.

In many hospitals, though first procedure
is booked for 8 am, till 10 am procedure
would not have been started. In such cases a
reasonable penalty either from the patient
or from the doctor depending upon the rea-
sons could be implemented to reduce such
deliberate mistakes. Once the procedure is
prolonged, the concerned in charge need to
inform the doctor who booked for next pro-
cedure so that he can inform his patient/at-
tendants and re-schedule his procedure. It is
the responsibility of the in charge nurse and
the doctors to check the availability of re-
quired instruments, consumables, implants
and prosthesis before taking up a procedure.
A dedicated bio medical engineer for each
specialisation could ensure maintaining of
bio medical equipment on routine basis to
bring down sudden break downs. From the
management side, grouping the related OTs
and ensuring availability of required equip-
ment and infrastructure can reduce the
down times of OT.

OPTIMUM RESOURCE
UTILISATION IN OT
We need to book cases only after patient
get admitted and ensuring fitness and only
after clearance from insurance/TPA and
attendants.
One must have the moving sizes and
brands sufficiently at the hospital, as a
policy. One needs to understand with
the supplier to replace the used sizes
within the shortest time so that the next
procedure is not delayed.
One needs to ensures that required
brands are available before booking the
cases.
One needs to get required consent and
other forms duly filled and signed well
in advance, even before booking for OT
procedure.
Have backup arrangements with the
supplier or with the nearby hospital to take
as loan, when needed.
Proper maintaining of equipment and
periodical check-up of the equipment
will avoid any sudden breakdown. Giving
proper AMC/CMC will reduce the delay.
