DORNIER DO 335First look at Zoukei-Mura 1/35 Do 335
Z2017’s Scale ModelWorld they followed this with a revised oukei-Mura (ZM) released their first 1/32 scale Dornier 335 fighter in 2016, and at
tooling to produce the two-seat trainer. We have not featured this kit until now, as at both
Telford and the US Nationals in Phoenix, Zoukei-Mura were unable to provide a sample as they sold out all of their stock.
you will that more than ninety-five per cent is unchanged from the On opening the packed box,
fighter boxing, and this includes the use of frosted clear plastic for the fuselage and wings. ZM supply most of the visible interior
and I think the idea is that you can see through the fuselage at the detailed engines and interior parts. But this feature is negated
by the use of frosted clear plastic, as the detail below it is obscured so much its use is pointless. This
is a surprise as the clear parts like the canopy are really super. Fortunately, a coat of grey primer will soon reveal that the surface
detail is as beautifully rendered as on every other ZM kit I have seen. All the details of the two-seat
A-12 are perfectly reproduced, including the very basic seat for the instructor instead of the ejector seat supplied for the trainee up
front. The instructions are in ZM’s normal comprehensive style, which means that if something does not fit as shown you have
done something wrong. of this version were produced, Though only a few examples
the aircraft on the decal sheet carried a surprising number of markings, including US and RAF national insignia. It was a bit of a
surprise, therefore, that ZM have missed a trick by not including

these national insignias on the decal sheet, as they have odd proportions which will be a bit hard to source from the aftermarket.
this surprisingly large aircraft I believe that Zoukei-Mura’s If you have the space to house
version is the best on the market, especially if you want to go to town on opening up panels to reveal the detail revealed underneath. Now
if only someone would do some

high quality aftermarket parts to lift the kit to an even higher level!
DO 335 EXTRA PARTSAt the same time as ZM released the fighter kit they also produced
a number of aftermarket additions, some of which have been produced especially for them by other manufacturers
around the world. Some of these parts are generic and are suitable for all ZM Do 335 variants, not
just the two-seat version.SWS10-M01DO 335 METAL STRUTSThis simple set replaces the plastic
kit’s legs with much stronger metal ones. If you are going to be moving

your kit to shows or competitions these are a recommended addition, as the Do 335 legs are very tall and
spindly for such a large aircraft.SWS-M02 DO 335 WEIGHTED TIRESProduced in resin with a
subtle weighted effect, all you have to do is drop in the kit’s plastic hubs and paint.
SWS10-M03 TURNED METAL MACHINE GUN AND PITOT TUBEThis set supplies turned brass
barrels for the MK151 fuselage mounted cannons, as well as a brass pitot tube and underwing antenna
for FuG 25. These are produced in Poland by Master Models.

SWS10-M06 DO 335 RADIATORSThe first of two sets produced by Eduard supplies the prominent radiators for the Do 335. Though
the kit examples are good, this takes the detail to a level only achievable in etched brass.
SWS12-M01 DO 335 A-12 INTERIOR SETThis set supplies a pair of Eduard’s

pre-finished etched brass sets. It includes instrument and sidewall detail as well as two different
styles of seat belts for each cockpit. Using this set will give you detail that is far better than what can be achieved with paints and decals.
Zoukei-Mura has pushed what is possible to achieve out of the box CONCLUSION
in their plastic kits. And they are the only manufacturer I know of who have commissioned sets in metal, etched brass, turned brass, and resin
to complement their own release. from the company’s website, from All of these kits can be ordered

either their Japanese or American based companies, as well as at selected stockist worldwide. As
always, if you are attending the IPMS Nationals in both the United Kingdom and United States you can
purchase both the kits and associated detail sets, as well as a large range of bases and figures sets at these shows. These are at reasonable prices with
no fear of import or postal charges.be attending is Scale ModelWorld The next show Zokuei Mira will
at Telford, between the 10th and 11th of November 2018, followed by the US Nationals at Chattanooga, between the 7th and 11th of
August 2019 – but you had better be quick as these kits sell fast!

FIRST LOOK!

NEW WINGNUT WINGS 1/32 SCALE AVRO LANCASTER

The World is Ending!

W

hen Wingnut Wings
announced their latest
model, you would have
thought the world was coming
to an end with the reaction on
some Internet forums with
their latest announcement.
For release in late 2019 their
next subject is to be a 1/32 scale
Avro Lancaster in two boxings a
B.Mk1/III and a B.MK III Special
“Dambusters”. It is well known
that film director Peter Jackson
has been working on producing a
remake of the original Dambusters
film and I am sure that this
interest is the main reason for
the departure from Wingnuts
normal World War One subjects.
Apparently, this new project for
Wingnuts first started 7 years
ago so is quite well advanced with
plastic test shots already produced
and these will be on display at
Scale Modelworld at Telford on

the 10th and 11th of November.
So, the photographs that we
have seen so far show a mixture
of CAD (Computer Added Design)
and photographs of the plastic
test shots. What we can say from
what is visible in the images, is
that this may be the most detailed
model kit released to date. This
taken from the Wingnuts press
release is an idea of the main
features of the bomber version.
“66cm x 97cm (or 66cm x 28cm
with outer wings removed). Highly
detailed RR Merlin XX (for B.Mk.1)
or Packard V-1650-1 Merlin 28 (for
B.Mk.III). Internal canopy framing.
Dropped flaps. Removable outboard
wing sections for ease of display.
WWII era fabric covered elevators.
European theatre radiators and
nacelle intakes. Optional early
& late tailwheels, unweighted or
weighted (with full bomb load)
main wheels, H2s Radar, 500lb (UK
& USA), 1000lb, 4000lb “Cookie”
and SBC bombs, FN.20 or FN.120
rear turret with optional cut away
perspex, early & late bomb aimer’s
blisters & windows. Optional

dummy engine blocks so you don’t
need to assemble complete engines
to build model. Early DH.5/40
(needle) & late A5/138 (paddle)
type propellers & spinners.”
The Dambuster boxing will
feature Upkeep bouncing bomb and
its associated equipment as well as
the faired in mid upper turret and
the spotlights on the underside
that helped keep the aircraft at the
correct height above the water. “
Other details that will be
included is dummy engines if you
want to close up
the cowlings and a
realistic looking oil
canning effect on the
individual external
panels that is quite
a noticeable feature
of the Lancaster’s
construction when
seen close up.
The only two
downsides for

many is 1. Where do you store
it? ( And maybe how do you
get it into the house!) and 2.
Will you be able to afford it?
Wingnuts have said they
are hoping to price this kit
around the same price as the
Duellist’s boxing that contained
a Shorts Felixstowe and Hansa-
Brandenburg W.29 which is priced
at £267 at current exchange rates.
