Dunkelgrun RLM71 (XF-61) and
Schwartzgrun RLM70 (XF-27).
Gloss coat(s) followed, on which
the decals settled beautifully. I’d
decided early on to build A1+DA of
Geschwaderstab/KG53, from the
height of the Battle of Britain. I
was attracted by the white stripes
on the wings and fin as well as the
blue spinners. The decals settled

with them. A sand and repaint
of the offending area followed,
accompanied by much muttering.

No swastikas were supplied on
the kit decal sheet so these came

here and there, along with exhaust
stains and a little gentle chipping.
In order to represent chipping
on the airscrews I started by
applying Humbrol chrome silver

from a rattle can. This was followed
by a coat of hairspray, which acts
as a release agent between paint
layers, followed by the topcoat
of Schwartzgrun. Once this had
dried some gentle work with the
fingernails gave a lovely worn look
to the leading edges of the blades.

undercarriage and bomb bay doors,
after which I sealed the model with
Humbrol Matt Acrylic Varnish
from a rattle can. Once this was
dry I smoothed it all over with
a very old piece of 12000 grade
micromesh (this micromesh is so
