AIRSHOW FLYING LEGENDS
Legendary
N
ow in its 26th year, the two-
day Flying Legends Air Show
at Duxford never fails to
impress. The event on July 14 and 15
was again blessed by good weather,
spectacularly high temperatures
and jaw-dropping numbers of
warbirds on the flightline.
No fewer than 11 Spitfires got
the show started on the Saturday- the scramble and tailchase is
a tradition that will hopefully be
maintained for many years to
come. Other highlights included
a tribute to the film Battle of
Britain, marking its 50th (yes,
50th!) anniversary. This included
a mock dogfight between Spitfires
and four Hispano Buchóns. It was
also great to see four Hawker
Hurricanes in the air together,
and a fascinating ‘heritage flight’
comprising a modern Lockheed
Martin F-35 Lightning II flying witha World War Two-era Spitfire and
North American P-51D Mustang.
A Curtiss trio showcased aircraft
from the Hawk family, and the
Salzburg, Austria-based Flying
Bulls team provided a rarely
seen machine – its immaculate,
four-engined Douglas DC-6B
OE-LDM. Both days concluded with
the famous Legends ‘balbo’, an
evocative and wonderfully noisy
