Welcome
Y
ou will notice immediately from this page that
there’s a new face at the helm of FlyPast.
I’ve loved aircraft for as long as I can remember,
my rst aviation experience being the awesome sight
and sound of RF-4C Phantom IIs blasting down the
runway at RAF Alconbury when I was four years
old. The roar of the afterburners almost scared the
life out of me, but oddly, from then on, I was hooked. Soon after I remember
exploring the inside of a Canberra cockpit section at a local country show...
and loving that distinct smell that only aircraft exude. Meld these memories
with anecdotes from my grandmother, who was a civilian ‘Fen Tiger’ aircraft
mechanic at Horsey Toll maintenance unit (on the outskirts of Peterborough)
during the war, and my passion for aviation was set in stone. It led me to
serve as an RAF armourer for several years (in support of the Phantom and
Tornado F.3, and Buccaneer as a civilian), but since gaining my journalism
quali cation in 1995 I have written for various market-leading consumer
publications. For the past eight years I’ve worked on FlyPast’s sister title
Air x Model World being a lifelong ‘kit-basher’.
Now though, it’s time for me to enter the realm of full-size aircraft. It’s
an exciting prospect, and one that was quickly delivered when I stepped
into Classic Wings’ new Harvard for the feature in this issue. I’m already
receiving solid and good-humoured support from deputy editor Steve Beebee
and contributing editor Ken Ellis – it’s going to be great fun, and an honour,
to ensure FlyPast continues to deliver the best in aviation history and
warbird coverage. Other highlights so far have included visiting the newly
transformed RAF Museum London, and CEO Maggie Appleton MBE gives a
fascinating insight regarding the attraction’s reinvention on page 48, which
of course also helps celebrate the RAF’s 100th anniversary.
Another personal passion is aviation art, and besides this edition offering
a report on the Guild of Aviation Artists’ annual exhibition, we continue our
new ‘Story Behind the Scene’ feature, in which brush-wielding maestros get
to describe the inspiration behind their latest works.
Factor in our focus on Canada’s ying Lancaster, that country’s wartime
Beau ghter missions and a Spotlight on the Bf 109E (among other content),
and I hope you’ll nd this month’s FlyPast a truly well-rounded and
enjoyable read.
