Reg keeps all his spares and
recovery gear in the storage
box, with plenty of tray space
for the rest of his gear

  • Eaton E-Lockers front and rear

  • Dobinsons MRR Adjustable shocks

  • PSR 2in bodylift

  • 285/75/R16 Hankook Dynapro MTs

  • NPC 1200Nm heavy duty clutch

The 4JJ1 has a reputation as one of the most reliable engines
you can get in a modern dualcab ute. With that in mind, Reg has
left it alone to do its thing. Where he has turned his attention
however, is the driveline of the D-MA X. The front end has been
raised 60mm, on Dobinson Coilovers and the coils have been
swapped out for some heavy duty tapered Toyota springs. Up
the back are a set of 250kg Dobinson leaves with extended
shackles and a set of Dobinson MRR shocks. Couple that with
the 2in bodylift and Reg can easily clear the 285/75/R16
Hankook Dynapro MTs. That said, Reg isn’t 100% happy with
the suspension setup. “I’ve been through a few sets of
suspension and I’m still struggling to fi nd a comfortable setting
for the front”, explains Reg. “Down the track I want to fi t some
different shocks as well as adjustable upper control arms and
some stronger CVs too just to make her a bit more reliable.”

ENGINE AND DRIVELINE

  • Apex single toolbox

  • Custom dual tyre swingaway

  • Darche Rooftop Tent

A lot of people seem to go overboard with their tray setups.
They need to have all the latest gear and the best looking
jackoff alloy canopies. But we’re a big believer in the ‘less is
more’ tactic for one main reason – weight. This is why we
reckon Reg has hit the nail on the head with his setup. Up the
front is a 60L Companion fridge on an MSA drop down fridge
slide. Behind it in the gap between the toolbox and the fridge
are a couple of spare jerries and a gas bottle. That’s a fair bit
of weight already that is nicely placed up at the headboard
where you want it. Down the driver side of the vehicle is a
toolbox which is home to tools and spares, as well as the 12V
setup. Mounted on the back of the storage box is a Joolca
Hottap which is in a protective cover and is plumbed into the
undertray 62L watertank. That tank is also hooked up to a
17Lp/m Seafl ow water pump which means that Reg has
plumbed hot and cold water on the go for whenever he needs
it. Up the back Reg has mounted two spares on a custom built
swingaway, but the tyres still sit over the tray for better
weight distribution – perfect for a touring vehicle.
