Whether it’s towing the missus’ horses around or lugging the
CanAm buggy out in the scrub for a play with the blokes,
Jamie’s ute does more towing than most. Now, you might be
thinking “So what? I tow stuff every day of the week.” However
it’s one thing to tow up a – by national standards – decent
highway on a day rarely gets above 30°C, it’s another
altogether to lug the same loads in the insane heat and
humidity that Darwin gets year-round. Then, add in hours of
long tarmac stretches to get to the destination and the need
to overtake quad roadtrains and you start to realize that ‘good
enough’ won’t cut the mustard.
Ask any diesel expert and they’ll agree that one of the best
things you can do for reliability and lower EGTs on a modern
common-rail ute is to fi t a bigger exhaust. The more the
exhaust can fl ow the exhaust gases away from the turbo and
out the tailpipe, the quicker the turbo’s going to spool up and
the cooler the motor’s going to run. Jamie’s running a
thumping 4inch stainless exhaust that the fellas at A A A
Fabrications knocked together, and we can attest for the fact
that it sounds absolutely angry at full noise. Love it!
When you need to hit the anchors on a hot day with a three
tonne trailer on the back, you want to know you can rely on
your brakes. One of the biggest failures is the soft brake
hoses ballooning from heat fatigue, and the solution is to do
what Jamie has done and fi t braided brake lines. These use a
steel braid around the rubber soft line, that acts as a
mechanical barrier against the lines ballooning. It’s a
cracking upgrade that every 4WD should have.
Surprisingly, Jamie says his favourite modifi cation isn’t the
lift, the big exhaust or the canopy – it’s the mirrors.
“As every Cruiser ute owner knows, the factory mirrors are
terrible for staying straight,” he explains. “I would say the
Clearview tow mirrors are my favourite modifi cation. The
wide-angled mirror on the bottom is a life-saver when you
can’t see out of the back window.”
