Australian Homespun - June 2018

(nextflipdebug5) #1
indicated by the red lines, then join
the sections to complete the panel.
It should measure 5^11 ⁄ 2 x19^1 ⁄ 2 in from
raw edge to raw edge.

23

From the solid white fabric, cut:

  • Two strips, 1^1 ⁄ 2 in across the
21in width of the fat quarter. Crosscut
    them to yield four rectangles, 1^1 ⁄ 2 x4^3 ⁄ 4 in
    (N) and one rectangle, 1^1 ⁄ 2 x14^1 ⁄ 2 in (O)

  • Four squares, 2in

  • Four rectangles, 1 x 1^1 ⁄ 8 in (P)

  • Two rectangles, 2^1 ⁄ 2 x4^1 ⁄ 2 in (Q).

24

From a dark print fabric from
your assortment, cut:

  • Two rectangles, 1 x 3^1 ⁄ 2 in (R)

  • Two rectangles, 1 x 4^3 ⁄ 4 in (S).

25

From the taupe print fabric, cut:

  • Two squares, 4^1 ⁄ 2 in (T).

26

Sew a white P rectangle to
each end of a dark R rectangle.
Sew a white N rectangle to the top
and bottom edge of this unit. Sew a
dark S rectangle to the bottom edge.
Repeat to make a second unit exactly
the same. They should measure 3^1 ⁄ 2
x4^3 ⁄ 4 in from raw edge to raw edge.

27

Repeat Steps 1-8 to make a Pie
block, but this time, use white
2in squares instead of the taupe ones
you used before.

28

Sew the units from Step 26 to
the left and right edges of the
Pie block. Join the white O rectangle
to the bottom edge. Then sew a
white Q rectangle to the left and
right edges of the panel.

29

On the wrong side of each of
the taupe T squares, mark the
centre of the top edge – 2^1 ⁄ 4 in from the
top corners. Draw a line from this mark
to one of the bottom corners: the
bottom right corner on one square and
the bottom left corner on the other.
Match these squares, right sides
together, with the left and right ends
of the stove top panel, as shown in
Diagram 7. Stitch on the lines, trim
the fabric^1 ⁄ 4 in outside the stitching
and press.

30

Trim the taupe shapes even
with the top edge of the stove
panel and the bottom corner of the
white triangle. Your stove top panel
should measure 4^1 ⁄ 2 x19^1 ⁄ 2 in from raw
edge to raw edge.

31

From one of the assorted
print fabrics, cut:

  • One rectangle, 1^1 ⁄ 2 x4^1 ⁄ 2 in

  • One rectangle, 5 x 4^1 ⁄ 2 in (towel).

32

From another print fabric, cut:

  • One rectangle, 1 x 4^1 ⁄ 2 in
    (towel trim).

33

From dark grey print fabric
#1, cut:

  • One rectangle, 1^1 ⁄ 2 x2^1 ⁄ 2 in (EE)

  • One rectangle, 1^1 ⁄ 2 x7^1 ⁄ 2 in (FF)
    (towel bar).

34

From dark grey print fabric
#2, cut:

  • One rectangle, 2^1 ⁄ 2 x4^1 ⁄ 2 in (U)

  • One rectangle, 4^1 ⁄ 2 x7^1 ⁄ 2 in (V)

  • One rectangle, 3^1 ⁄ 2 x 7in (W)

  • Four squares, 2in (X) (oven window).

35

From the pale yellow print
fabric, cut:

  • One rectangle, 1^1 ⁄ 2 x2^1 ⁄ 2 in (Y)

  • One rectangle, 1^1 ⁄ 2 x7^1 ⁄ 2 in (Z)

  • Two rectangles, 3^1 ⁄ 2 x9^1 ⁄ 2 in (AA)

  • Two rectangles, 2^1 ⁄ 2 x19^1 ⁄ 2 in (BB)
    (oven surrounds).

36

From a dark print fabric, cut:

  • Two rectangles, 1^1 ⁄ 2 x2^1 ⁄ 2 in
    (oven feet).

37

From the taupe print fabric, cut:

  • Two squares, 1^1 ⁄ 2 in (CC)

  • One rectangle, 1^1 ⁄ 2 x13^1 ⁄ 2 in (DD).

38

Assemble the towel by sewing
the towel trim rectangle
between the two rectangles cut for
the towel.

39

Make segments for the oven
window by sewing the EE strip
to the top edge of the Y strip and the
U strip to the bottom edge of the Y

STEPHANIE’S
ACCURACY TIP
Some of the patches in this quilt
end up being quite tiny – the
yellow triangles surrounding the
oven knobs are one example.
There are a couple of things you
can do to increase your accuracy
when sewing small shapes:

  • Sew with a shorter than usual
stitch length and press the seams
open, rather than to one side.

  • Spray the fabric with starch
    or fabric stabiliser before cutting
    and sewing it.
