The 9870 is designed and built in Mt Maunganui by IntertruckDistributors. Originally just an agent for Navistar’s International andIveco brand, managing director Comer Board put his heart and soul- as well as his many years of trucking experience – into turning
the company into a producer of a NZ-specced and built truck. Theadvantage is that every truck designed is built to the customers’needs.Intertruck produces three variants of the International Eagle 9870.The Day Cab, the Low Roof Sleeper and the Sky Roof. The cabshell of the 9870 is based on the original 9800i platform (the firstInternational Eagle designed by Intertruck). The 9800i was a good, solid truck with many still working hard in tough NZ conditions, but it’s fair to say when it comes to looks the old 9800s only everreceived the participation awards at any beauty contest. Theredefined 9870, with its staunch grill and drop visor is more likely tobe getting hit on at every bar in town. Brenics Transport’s 9870 is anin-your-face example of that point.SPACIOUS SLEEPER
Brenics has been around New Zealand roads for over 20 years, specialising in produce and packaging. The company has a lollyscramble of truck manufacturers in its fleet, including a couple ofolder Internationals, so the purchase of a new NZ-built Eagle wasalways on the books. The driver of the 9870, Rick Harkness, tells me, “I loved my oldtruck, but this is a whole new level”.Rick started in one of the old day cab International Eagles beforethe new 9870 turned up in mid-2017. With the old day cab Eagle, Rickwas in motels most nights when he was on the road but with thearrival of the spacious cab he can now camp in the truck. At 6-foot-3, Rick commends the interior room of the big Eagle.“I can stand up with just ducking my head a little bit; it’s got goodheadroom,” he says. The redefined 9870 Eagle also includes a raised bed, which shiftsthe fridge underneath, and even more storage space available in thesleeper cab.Aside from the benefits of extra space inside the truck, the otheradvantage the internationals are finding is a much lower tare weight.Intertruck salesman Shaun Jury says: “Comparing a 6x4 unit, we canbe as much as three-quarter tonne lighter than other makes.”Brenic’s 9870 tares in at just over 19 tonne. That’s with fridges, motors, spare tyres, chains and everything else, giving a payload ofAbove: Brenics’ new International 9870, designed and built by
