The 20th annual
Costume Designers
Guild Awards, hosted by
Gina Rodriguez (2) at
The Beverly Hilton, was
all about girl power. In
deference to the Time’s
Up and #MeToo move-
ments, the style-savvy
set wore black gowns and
Time’s Up pins. Kerry
Washington (4) was
honored with the Spotlight
Award, while Guillermo
del Toro (3) took home the
Distinguished Collaborator
prize. “A huge amount of
language that we transmit
who we are and what
we’re about is nonverbal,”
said The Shape of Water
helmer. “Costume is a
way we present ourselves
to the world.” Other win-
ners included I, Tonya’s
Jennifer Johnson and The
Handmaid’s Tale’s Ane
Crabtree (1). Said Crabtree
upon accepting her
award: “It’s a great time to
be a multiracial person.
It’s a great time for costume
design and for making
change. There’s been an
assault on women’s rights
[and] people of color and
their rights, and we are
part of the resistance. We
are part of the change.”

Unsolved: The Murders
of Tupac and the Notorious
B.I.G., which attempts to
solve the 1996 murders of
Tu p a c S h a k u r and Biggie
Smalls, premiered at Avalon
nightclub, a short drive
from where Smalls was
killed. “The show’s themes
deal with perception and
how perception chal-
lenges your best judgment,”
said executive producer
Anthony Hemingway (9),
who directed the majority of
the episodes for USA. “[It]
reminds us that we need
to stop and think about our
actions.” After a screening
of the first episode, the
club turned into a concert
venue with performances
by Wavyy Jonez (8), who
plays Biggie (Marcc
Rose (8) portrays Shakur,
as he did in 2015’s Straight
Outta Compton), Busta
Rhymes and Bone Thugs-
N-Harmony — a group that
worked with both artists
and paid tribute to them in
their set. — JEAN BENTLEYUnsolved
