When it was announced that
a reimagining of iconic novel
Picnic at Hanging Rock was
coming to Foxtel, the race
began to secure a role in the
eagerly-anticipated drama.
British actress and star of
Game of Thrones Natalie Dormer
leads the cast of this epic six-part
series that delves further into the
1967 book from Joan Lindsay.
The plot details the mysterious
disappearance of several
schoolgirls and their teacher
on Valentine’s Day in 1900.
For Dormer, it wasn’t only
about peeling back the layers
of her character, headmistress
Mrs Hester Appleyard.
“I was attracted to the project
because of the script,” she says.
“Obviously the novel is brilliant
and beloved but there is so
much to flesh out within it.
It is a great ensemble piece.”
Joining Dormer are rising
actresses Lily Sullivan, Madeleine
Madden, Samara Weaving and
Ruby Rees. The performers talk
to next month’s Foxtel magazine
about the haunting nature and
demanding work involved in
bringing such an iconic story
to the small screen. They also
reveal why this version will be
a TV event that captivates
audiences all around the world.
“This is a period piece,” says
Sullivan, who plays student
Miranda. “[But what the girls
go through] is still relevant.”
