David’s one of those guys with knowledge
beyond his years, and it shows in the top-
end combination he put together, with every
component perfectly matched to the next,
not just for outright horsepower but also for
retaining drivability.
Air enters the system through an 1150cfm Holley
Dominator carb, where it’s met with fuel supplied
by an Aeromotive A1000 electric pump. From
there, the resulting combination passes through the
hand-finished CNC-ported Dart 4500 Dominator
manifold and into 227cc Dart Pro 1 CNC-ported
heads. None too surprisingly, those heads are full
of custom-specced components, all working at the
command of a Comp Cams roller cam.
The old transmission was good but not good
enough to back the new combination, so
Chuck Mann was commissioned to craft one of
his legendary Powerglides.
Once TPE had completed the engineering side — a
project that included moving the firewall rearwards
no fewer than 10 inches, constructing a new floor,
and enlarging the rear wheel tubs — the car was
handed over to fellow NZV8 feature car owner
Glen Brewer at Paintworkz to unleash his magic.
Glen spent hour after hour straightening the body
and preparing it for the eight coats of gloss black
PPG paint he’d soon apply.
“After the new paintwork, it was back to TPE Racing
to have the new engine box, diff, and brakes fitted,”
Jason explains. “We then decided to go ahead and
add three engine plates — [one] in the front, [one in
the] back, and [one] for the gearbox, as we wanted
to run a two-stage NOS kit in the future.”
