NZV8 — February 2018

(Frankie) #1

Grease Martin is a familiar sight at events in this beaut
’32 Ford coupe, which has been around for about the
past three decades. The chopped three-window body
is pure hot rod, but the star of the show has got to
be that supercharged flathead-based V8 topped with
genuine Ardun overhead-valve (OHV) heads — sheer
hot-rodding pornography!

Below: We’d go so far as to call Josh Reid’s Holden EH wagon a bit of a sleeper. Sure, the term gets thrown around
fairly liberally these days, but there’s no way you’d pick what this thing’s packing, even with its fat Weld Draglite
rims. A big block Chev has been stuffed between the front rails, and Josh has managed to keep it all under the
bonnet. With a Saginaw four-speed manual at Josh’s left hand, this little EH wagon has got to be a blast to pedal!

Below: The inimitable styling cues of the ’30s were
exemplified in the Lincoln-Zephyr line of cars, and
1938 was the first year that the Lincoln-Zephyrs were
offered in convertible form. This beautifully restored
convertible coupe runs the correct 267ci flathead V12,
albeit warmed up a touch over the factory offering

On top of it all is the contribution that the
Stragglers Rod and Kustom Club makes towards
local charities. Over the previous 11 years, the
Cambridge Charity Car Show raised more than
$130K for children in need, and the proceeds of this
year’s massive turnout will add to that.
“We don’t make any money off this,” Glenn says. “All
the proceeds from the event go to the children. It’s
just a gold coin for entry, but some people give $20
or whatever — the people are awesome. It really
makes me proud to be a Straggler.”
The Stragglers aren’t content to rest on their
laurels, with plans for next year’s event already
taking shape. After feedback from many attendees,
who had travelled to Cambridge for the whole
weekend, the Stragglers are hoping to be able
to introduce a cruise night on the Saturday
before the event, to maximize the good vibes
for showgoers while also benefiting the local
Cambridge community. It looks like New Zealand’s
greatest charity car show is about to get a whole
lot greater!
