On the engine front, Alan knew that the motor
needed a sheet-metal manifold and twin
Dominator carbs; however, at a cost of around
$4K, this was well outside the budget. That’s when
Gary came to the rescue once more, using his
years of drag racing and car building expertise to
convert Alan’s tunnel ram into a manifold suitable
for the job. The two 1050cfm carbs were soon
fitted, and would receive a solid flow of VP Racing
C23 fuel thanks to a MagnaFuel pump set-up.
While high-octane fuel on its own is nice, we all
know that it’s with the addition of nitrous that the
fun really begins — and, with two 200hp shots
added, it’s one hell of a party.
Running a car of this level isn’t something that
you can just jump into, and Alan knew the best
way to protect his investment was to spend a
couple of seasons crewing for Gary on his own
car, making sure to learn as much as he could
along the way.
While that rapid education has certainly paid off, it
couldn’t help the disaster that struck on the car’s
first outing, when the crank snapped clean in half.
