There’s a new addition to the
Australian mountain bike scene, as
Ironman have launched the Reef to
Reef, expanding on Australia’s oldest
mountain bike event – the RRR.

The new four day mountain bike
stage race in Tropical North
Queensland will run from 9-
August, on terrain that ranges from
the jungle trails of Smithfield, to the
fast and dry trails at Davies Creek
on the Atherton Tablelands, through
the outback trails of Mt Molloy and
the Kuranda Range, and finally on
the infamous Bump Track with a
race finish in Port Douglas.

The RRR (Rural, Rainforest and
Reef) still remains as a single day
option with the 35 and 70km options
both starting at Wetherby Station.

The new full course will tackle

4,000m of climbing over the four
days, and takes in a greater variety
of trails than just about any event
in Australia. From rainforest
singletrack to fast double track
descents and open farm country –
it’s got it all. The event can be ridden
in teams or as solo riders. If you’re
in a team, you have to be no less
than two minutes apart. There are 10
qualifying spots for the ABSA Cape
Epic on offer at the Reef to Reef, so
choose your team-mate wisely.

Race distances are set to be long
enough to be challenging, but short
enough to make sure you remember
you’re on holiday in Tropical North
Queensland. Head to the event
website for full details on the
courses and race entry.

If you’re kicking yourself
for missing out on the
Cannonball Festival, fear
not – there’s always more
to come at Thredbo. And
the Thredbo Super Enduro
gives you the chance to
tackle all of the gravity
trails on the mountain
against the clock. You can
do it on your own, or make
a team with some mates.

You’ve got five hours to lay
down your fastest run on
each of the three gravity
trials – the only catch being
you have to do it on the one

bike. So do you take a trail
bike for speed on the Flow
and All-Mountain trail and
hold on for the Cannonball
Run? Or do you use a DH
rig on the less technical
runs and just suffer on the
pedalling sections? Or have
you got a wicked enduro
bike that will suit all three?
That’s your call. If you
want to try it out, keep the
weekend of February 24-
free. Hit the website for
full details.
