Whyte have gone with something new, something
updated and something refreshed with their 2018
range of dual suspension bikes.

The new comes in the form of the S-150 which
is designed for speed and features 150mm of
travel and 29er wheels. You’ll also get a slack 65.
degrees head angle, allied to a relatively short
435mm chainstay for such a long-travel bike. If
you need plenty of traction then 27.5 x 2.8” tyres
can be retro-fitted with no problems.

Whyte designer Ian Alexander claims the S-
will perform unlike anything else with 29-inch
wheels – and as you’ll see from our in-depth
review on page 72 you’ll feel like you can go as
hard as you want, or simply ride it all day, every
day on any type of terrain.

The G-170 is an update of the tried and tested
enduro-specific G-160, with longer chainstays and
170mm of travel at both ends thanks to the Quad

The end of 2017 brings the end of
one of the most dominant cross-
country and marathon teams
in Australia, the Trek-Shimano
Team. This team, run by Peter
Dowse, took riders to race wins
and podium places in almost
all of the biggest mountain bike
events in Australia. In 2018
many of the talented riders from
the squad will carry on under
different banners.

Three-time National Marathon
Champion, Crocodile Trophy, Port
to Port and Cape to Cape winner
(amongst most other marathon
races too) Brendan Johnston
will now be racing for Giant, and
equipped with Shimano XTR,
thanks to continuing support
from Shimano Australia.

Another Canberra local, Em
Viotto, will also stay on with
support from Shimano Australia,
and be racing aboard a Giant with
support from Pushys.

In the west, the talented brother
and sister, Reece and Sarah
Tucknott have created a team
with excellent local and national
support.

“John Carney from Wembley
Cycles has been one of our
biggest supporters during our
cycling career and it is an honour
to be back aboard Specialized
and his product in 2018,” said
Reece. “We’re also fortunate
enough to continue our great
relationship with Shimano into
2018; generous enough to be
supplying all running gear, spare
parts as well as Pro Bike Gear
touch points, Shimano will make
2018 a fast, reliable and smooth
ride!”

The Tucknotts’ calendar includes
the National Series and an
overseas campaign in North
America.

SHUFFLINGS

4 suspension and metric shock. Clearance at the
back is huge, and the WTB i29 rims give the option
of running 2.6” (and more) treads should that suit
your riding. The mid-level RS model (as well as the
top-of-the-range Works) features a carbon fibre front
triangle, although there is also a budget-friendly
S edition in aluminium. Expect to see this bike
challenging for honours in the EWS next season, as
well as ripping down your local trails.

The third bike in the range is the mid-travel T-
which gets a modest refresh – no bad thing given it
has already proved itself super-capable of providing
a whole heap of fun on Australian trails for the past
three years since it first arrived on our shores. The
short and stiff back end remains, but SRAM Eagle
groupsets are now available as well as new RockShox
and Fox suspension set-ups.

Also on offer from Whyte in 2018 is the 905 hardtail,
featuring RockShox Revelation fork and 2.8” tyres to
deliver an aggressive and agile ride out on the trails.
