“We started playing together in
Sweden. He was a striker and I was a
defensive midfielder,” he says. “We
were always in the same team.
“We’d go and play together in the
streets every day which was just good
fun but, looking back now, it was all
extra practice.
“He’s since said that seeing me come
to England made him more motivated
back home and he eventually got his
move. I’m very proud of him.”
Another professional sportsman in
the Olsson clan is Dallas Mavericks
basketball player Dirk Nowitzki, who
is married to Martin’s sister Jessica.
And Olsson admits that his brother-in-
law pays close attention to the Swans,
and hopes to make the journey across
the Atlantic soon.
“He follows the Swans every day. He
watches all the games and always
comments on Whatsapp,” he laughs.
“He supports Swansea now I’m here
and likes to get involved.
“It’s good to have him around. He’s
tried to come over but is always busy
with his basketball. He did come toEuro 2016 with the family, but it’s
hard when he’s in mid-season, too.”
Now approaching a year with theSwans, 29-year-old Olsson insists he
is enjoying life in south Wales despite
his team’s recent struggles on the
pitch.
This season is his ninth in the Premier
League and, with a possible
appearance at the World Cup finals on
the horizon, the likeable Swede has
plenty to be positive about overall.
“It’s gone quickly – I’m enjoying my
time here,” he adds. “When we playthe way we can, it suits me very
much.
“You can see the quality in training
and I’m happy to be here.
“When I was younger, I wanted to play
in the Premier League and I’m doing
that now. I wanted to play at a big
international tournament, I’ve done
that and have the chance of playing at
a World Cup so I can’t complain, that’s
