AUSSIE BRIDES
Say ‘I do’ to romance at the
F
or every bride, choosing what to wear
down the aisle is an important decision.
Australian bridalwear has changed
dramatically over the years, reflecting
shifts in fashion along with social, cultural,
economic and political values.
“The Love Is... exhibition spans 200 years
of bridal style, features more than 60 looks and
reflects Australia’s evolution through fashion,”
says curator Glynis Jones. “We drew on the
[Powerhouse Museum’s] fashion collection,
which comprises almost 30,000 pieces – many
of those being wedding gowns – to ex
bridalwear history. It’s a celebration of
fashion – who doesn’t love a gorgeous
wedding frock? – but also explores ho
marriage has changed over the years.”
From convict gowns to high-society
wear, the flapper freedom of the 1920s
to Swinging ’60s minis, Glynis shares
the stories behind a selection of her
favourite gowns in the exhibition.
