Kerri-Anne: Yes. The financial impact has
been an absolute shock, as it would be
for anyone. But what was harder to deal
with is the fact that because John had
his accident after the age of 65 there’s
very little assistance available for him.
We have eight hours a week of in-home
nursing care for him but had he been
under 65 he’d be entitled to up to
60 hours a week care from the
government. I was just expected to
put John into a nursing home but
that wasn’t going to happen because
quadriplegia isn’t an age-related issue. If
he went into a nursing home he’d be in
bed all day and at risk of bedsores and
pneumonia and he’d die. Simple as that.

Kerri-Anne: At one stage we absolutely
thought we’d have to leave our house
[in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs]. We’ve
lived there for 19 years and we love it,
and while we briefly considered moving
