17: DESIGN PADDINGTON HOUSE
LOCATION PADDINGTON, SYDNEY
This narrow terrace in Paddington underwent
a major renovation to remove the bad ‘70s
decor and restore some of its original charm
while bringing it into the 21st century. The
kitchen and dining room are located half a
level down from the central living room, but all
the spaces are connected by the same vein.

“The fl oors, walls and ceilings to the kitchen
and living areas are predominantly polished
and off -form concrete,” explains homeowner
and architect Annabelle Chapman. Aluminium
sliding doors stack away and open up the rear
section of the house to the polished concrete
rear terrace to create a continuity between
the spaces. Rich timber cabinetry covers one
wall of the space, providing a contrasting

texture to the ubiquitous use of concrete
and adding the warmth of a natural element.
A large centre island provides convenient
seating and adequate prep space for this
light-fi lled kitchen.
