Auckland-based award-winning designer
Ken Crosson has designed a contemporary
coastal home that is innovative, warm and
welcoming. “I wanted to design something
that was cutting edge, yet had a connection
to this little bach settlement, and I think it
has achieved that,” says Ken. Homeowners
Wendy Grell and Steve Wilson couldn’t agree
more and are delighted with their new home.
Outdoor cosy wicker furniture invites you
to sit and immerse yourself in the endless
coastal views. On the other side of the home,
a bench table and seating is tucked into a
cosy garden nook, also sharing a coastal
view and protected from the elements.

This modern family home was designed with
nature in mind, connected to the surrounding
bushland and fi lled with warm natural light.
Outdoors, movable screens are a feature of
the home; they allow shadows to shapeshift
across the grassy lawns and were inspired by
Angela’s time in Asia. There the family can sit
and relax, and when darkness falls, break out
the popcorn, get cosy in some oversized bean
bags and watch movies on the outdoor movie
screen. For Mark the courtyard is his favourite
aspect of the design. “The courtyard is the
green heart of the home and a functional,
multipurpose space which provides a unique
point of entry, an arrival experience and a
separation between the private realm of the
home and the architectural studio,” he says.
