01: DESIGN BIRD HOUSE
LOCATION GOLD COAST, QUEENSLAND
Architects Mark and Angela Jamison have
designed a house that comprises two pods
— one for their work studio and the other
for their home — with a central courtyard
that connects the spaces. Their design ethos
centred around creating a home that was
respectful to the environment; they wanted
a petite footprint to cover their needs and no
more. Despite the semi-tropical Queensland
location, air-conditioning is not required as
ample louvred windows supply cooling cross
ventilation. There’s also a rainwater tank,
insulation and an electric heat pump. “We feel
like we are living in the tree canopy; we can
hear the birds, the leaves rustling in the wind,
and we feel the cool breeze fl ow throughout
the house,” says Angela.

02: DESIGN RHYLL HOUSE
LOCATION RHYLL, PHILLIP ISLAND
This eco-friendly holiday home ticks lots of
green boxes in design, material selection, and
even its shape. It was inspired by the concept
of a black box rising from the surrounding
natural landscape. Strategically positioned
windows create cross ventilation, the outdoor
deck was constructed from composite
recycled timber and plastic, the slab itself
incorporates recycled content, and there
are insulated fl oors, walls and ceilings.
