01: DESIGN CLIFFTOP HOUSE
LOCATION HILLSBOROUGH
Perched precariously on the cliff s overlooking
Manukau Harbour, the Divett house was a
challenging build, but the satisfi ed homeowners
seem pleased with the resulting views. Set on
such a diffi cult site, it was no surprise to the
homeowners that the earthworks budget blew
out by $40,000. Wanting to create a home
that “suspended them in the trees”, the Divetts
contacted Box Living to build them a three-
fl oor pole house that would navigate the steep
site. The company’s post-and-beam system of
construction uses elements of prefabrication
and a modular grid to aid the building process.
A component of the build, steel-cross bracing,
serves to strengthen the framework but also
lends the building an industrial air.

02: DESIGN CLASS HOUSE
LOCATION MELBOURNE
Not wanting to destroy the integrity and charm
of his childhood home, homeowner Tony and
his partner Michelle, with the help of Sherbrooke
Design and Construction, undertook a mammoth
renovation to turn their tired Victorian cottage
into a contemporary home that meets the
entertaining needs of the current residents. To
blend the traditional elements of the original
dwelling with more contemporary liveability,
the back section of the home was demolished
to make way for a two-storey extension that
provided an open-plan living/dining space
that opened out onto a rear courtyard with a
swimming pool and rear-lane-accessible garage.
At the same time, work was completed on
the front of the house to revitalise the facade,
restoring its character and street appeal without
sacrifi cing heritage markers. The reconfi guration
of the internal front rooms also created more
useable space for Tony and Michelle.
