10: DESIGN NORTHCOTE HOUSE
LOCATION NORTHCOTE, VICTORIA
The modern sensibilities of this streamline
bathroom directly refl ect the design ethos
of this renovation build in Northcote,
Victoria. Turning an Edwardian cottage into
a spacious family home was achieved with a
deliberate separation between old and new.
Although the extension echoes the existing
residence, the architects deliberately selected
juxtaposing materials and colours so the
new build would be “a true presentation
of its timeline, rather than an attempt at
reproduction”, according to architect Sally
Timmins. The monochromatic tone of the
newly constructed bathroom refl ects this
design direction. Large-format white matte
tiles cover the fl oor and run up to the ceiling,
making the room appear larger, while a dark-
tile feature wall grounds the space. Modern
chrome fi ttings and streamline fi xtures are
a subtle addition to the space.

11: DESIGN CATALINA HOUSE
LOCATION AVALON BEACH, NEW SOUTH WALES
White hex tiles running across the fl oor and
up the walls serve as a focusing feature of this
contemporary bathroom in a home set in a
seaside location. The homeowners wanted a
simple neutral palette to create a fresh space for
their growing family. A light-well over the shower
invites natural light down into the double-
height space to create the feeling that one is
bathing in the sun. In this bathroom, angular
lines, clean fi nishes and no-fuss fi ttings make
for a deceptively pared-back design that quietly
announces its perfection of form and function.

12: DESIGN COASTAL CRIB
LOCATION COOGEE, NEW SOUTH WALES
In stark contrast to the colourful ‘beach kitsch’
of the living spaces in this Federation cottage,
the bathrooms utilise framing and patterning
as points of interest rather than colour. “The
bathrooms explore a restrained monochromic
palette and are a celebration of natural
materials,” explains designer Rachel Luchetti.
Diff erent patterned tiles in the shower and
above the vanity bring in added texture and
just a hint of colour. The blonde wood cabinetry
emphasises the high ceiling and refl ects the
traditional Scandi design at play throughout
the rest of the house. Contemporary matte
black fi ttings seem to punctuate the otherwise
neutral space, making a strong statement
that doesn’t overwhelm.

13: DESIGN RHYLL HOUSE
LOCATION RHYLL, PHILLIP ISLAND
A weekend getaway that’s anything but your
average holiday home, Rhyll House is all the
motivation one needs to take a break. Revolving
around a material palette brimming with
concrete, blackbutt timber, rusted Corten steel,
textured tiles and black accents, the end design
result here is a harmonious space with cutting-
edge features and a laidback air. The clean and
simple lines of the home’s three bathrooms
encapsulate the overall design aesthetic. White
textured tiles add visual interest and keep
the bathrooms from feeling too stark. Timber
vanities introduce a rustic element, but maintain
the contemporary chic with their minimalist
design, all of which is off set by the polished
concrete fl oors that add an industrial edge.
