- LIGHT & SHADOW Cassini arrived during late summer in
Saturn’s southern hemisphere, and this view from May 2005
shows the planet’s natural tawny colour. The bluish tinge near
the top results from sunlight striking the northern part of the
globe more obliquely, resulting in Rayleigh scattering. Note the
interplay of Saturn’s delicate, translucent A ring and its finely
striated shadow on the planet’s disk.
